432 pair
of Stockings have run-in with the Law
It could have only happened in Chicago March 4, 1945 as Women were
just getting
used to wearing strong sheer, inexpensive stockings made from
nylon
 |
when
almost
all production of the miracle fiber was redirected to war material. The black market in nylon
hosiery
was thriving for months after the end of
World War II
and anyone who had to go back to thick
cotton or
flimsy rayon could tell you why.
Frank O'Connor was
not charged in this case, but went
home without his 432
pair of confiscated nylons. The arresting officer, the
Chicago Tribune wrote, "said he
would hold the
hosiery for for him." |

Hosiery Run-in
Cont'd.
1,000 women lined up in November 1945 in hopes of buying one of 300
pairs
of remaining nylons. It was said that the remaining 132 pair had
just "run away".The Government in 1946 set the fixed price of very sheer nylons
at $1.70,
but the black market street price brought up to $10.00.
Betty Grable raised
thousands of dollars for war bonds by auctioning off her
stockings.
Researched from the archives of the Chicago Tribune.

comfort,
independence, freedom, respect, love and a pair of pantyhose
